The use of phone while driving is becoming an ever increasing problem in our society today. Since the cell phone became a staple in life, it has caused accidents by distracted drivers. Recently, the use of phones has changed from merely talking to texting which proves to be an even worse distraction that takes people-s eyes off the road and even more today we see the surgence of social media and access to it on our phones. This is even more of a distraction and has caused the rate of accidents to increase.
Accidents this past year have increased to 5.5 million where 31,000 were fatal and over 2,000,000 people were injured. This increase has been attributed partly to social media use on phones and text messaging as is prevalent by the fact that 61, well over half were involving only one vehicle. This has caused many states to take action on drivers who willingly choose to become distracted and endanger their lives as well as the lives of other motorists on the road. We have seen many laws passed recently banning the use of cell phones in the car. All of this says clearly that social media has become a serious distraction to motorists today.
